Our Story

We gather weekly to have fun playing chamber music together

The remarkable story of the Indooroopilly Chamber Orchestra dates back to the 1950s, when a small group of friends began to meet regularly in their lounge to play music together.

After developing a love for classical music, the children of the Birtles and Teakle families joined together to create their own quartet: The Birt-Teak Ensemble. Playing violin, piano, clarinet and cello, they practised mostly in the Teakle home at Indooroopilly. Gradually, other young musicians joined them, giving birth to the Indooroopilly Chamber Orchestra that still performs for the local community today.

Today, the Indooroopilly Chamber Orchestra is led by conductor Greta Hunter. A flautist and music educator with a passion for community music, Greta’s conducting career began when she was just 14. Since then, she has participated in a variety of prestigious conducting development and training programs, including international masterclasses in the Czech Republic and Wales.

These are just some of the personal stories that embody the very heart of what makes Indooroopilly Chamber Orchestra unique. We help those who haven’t picked up an instrument in decades to rediscover their love of music; we support people who have taken up a new instrument later in life; we encourage busy professionals to make time for their passion and improve their skills; we experience how composers expressed themselves through music; and we celebrate centuries of enduring musical history.

Indooroopilly Chamber Orchestra provides a welcoming space for enthusiastic, passionate members of the community to embrace a fulfilling musical journey, and creates exciting opportunities for up-and-coming local musicians to embark on a fulfilling career.

We gather together weekly in a relaxed, convivial atmosphere. As a community orchestra we always welcome new players, embracing both regular and casual members of all skill levels. We don’t audition; we welcome everyone who loves chamber music, at every stage of life.

We rehearse most Thursday evenings throughout the year at Indooroopilly State High School; however we sometimes use different venues or have a short break following a concert, so please contact us if you would like more information about our rehearsal schedule.

Send an email to icorchestra@gmail.com.  Please note our email account is checked 2 or 3 times a week, not daily.

We look forward to you joining our music-making.

Through our public performances, we also provide opportunities for friends, families and the wider community to enjoy memorable experiences immersed in the beauty of chamber music. For information about our next concert, click here.
